CHAPTER 6

It takes everything in me to keep from calling out to him. The black streak sliding through the gilded crowd is gone in moments.

Before I can stop myself, I stand. I hurry through the crowd via the path Brand carved through them. Once we're outside of the ballroom, I know he can hear the click of my heels in the large, silent hallway. But he doesn’t stop walking. He doesn't acknowledge me, and his strides are far too long for me to catch up with him without running.

All I can do is sigh out my relief when he slips into one of the rooms. Thirty seconds or so later, I'm standing in the doorway, staring across the darkness at him. He's slouched forward in the large chair, one hand cupping his bowed head, the other flexing and relaxing.

“Brand? Is everything all right?” I barely eke out the words, scared of what answers my questioning might bring.

He looks up at me briefly, stands, and closes the distance between us in a flash. I can't help but shrink back from the rapid approach, but he simply brings his hand up to slam the door behind me before returning to his seat, hands now folded in his lap.

I freeze completely. The sound of the door slam seems to bounce back and forth in my mind in a violent echo.

I can hear people just outside the room through the window that looks over one corner of the English garden. I can't make out what they're saying, and they're only further jumbled by the start of sweetly singing violins and cellos. It dawns on me that no one could possibly hear us now, and I begin to relax a bit.

“What do you want from me?” he hisses into the half-light.

His voice has taken on the angry stubbornness I'm so familiar with, and instead of making me shrink from him, it pulls me forward. Anger or not, it's closer to the Brand I know than I've seen him all weekend.

I take a few timid steps toward him and ease myself down onto the edge of the chaise, sending up a small plume of dust into the already stuffy, uncomfortable air in what was essentially a storage room, an unused parlor that I believe was employed once during a fancy dress party, and never again.

“I don't want anything from you, Brand. Not... anything big, I just wanted to talk to you. You haven't really been yourself, and I don't know what's wrong. I want to help. Anything I can do. Just tell me what's bothering you, please.”

His eyes meet mine for the first time since I walked into the room, burning straight through me, even in the low light cast through the blinds of the window.

“Why the fuck didn't you tell me you were engaged, Vivian?” He sits forward suddenly, resting his palm on his knee. “Living in your own little utopia, about to marry the man of your dreams, and not one word to me? Yeah, I'll admit, I'm a little pissed off about that.
